A 1936 asthma attack forced Chester to relocate to the improved climate at his father’s Georgia farm, where one night in the late 1930s he first heard Merle Travis playing guitar from WLW in Cincinnati. After the Atkinses divorced, Ida Atkins remarried, in 1932, and Chester began to learn guitar and fiddle, often playing with his brother and sister and their stepfather, Willie Strevel. His wife Ida, Chester’s mother, sang and played piano. James Atkins, his father, was an itinerant music teacher who had previously been married. Many hit records he produced during his days at RCA are now classics.Ītkins grew up in the hills near the tiny, remote East Tennessee town of Luttrell. His immense influence on country, rock, and jazz musicians from Jerry Reed to George Harrison, Duane Eddy, and Earl Klugh has lasted more than a half-century. ![]() This is one of only a few resources for which I've made that claim. No single country instrumentalist has achieved the renown and respect of Chester Burton Atkins. Overall, I'd say this is an excellent resource for every guitar student and teacher. The DVD is properly broken in many chapters, which is perfect for getting right to the song or explanation you want. The DVD comes with a full sized book, which looks significantly better. I had owned the VHS tape, which had come with a small VHS sized booklet, so I was already familiar with the product. Speaking of YouTube, I'm sure you can find clips of this video to watch first before buying. None of that will detract from how useful this stuff is for learning, espcially in this day and age when people learn all kinds of things off YouTube, which looks and sounds terrible by comparison. ![]() ![]() The video quality is decent but its not HD, again its from its time. The music is catchy but has that "cheesy" sound from the 1980's when it was made. You hear the song and play along with Chet and his 2 young students. Overall, an EXCELLENT summary of useful techniques presented in this book, each with a song that makes practicing the technique come alive. ![]() Other songs/topics/lessons include: 2-chord song, 3-chord song, blues, bass-chord technique, alternating I-V bass technique, fingerpicking chords, finger warmups (Knucklebusters is an excellent exercise for players of all levels), and much more. It starts off very easy, and by the end Chet is playing some really cool things for advanced players (probably very easy things for him). Each song starts simply and builds, so more advanced players can do/learn something challenging as well.įor example, the first topic is tuning, and the song is called "In Tunisia". There is a brief explanation of something, followed by a song that uses it. This is not all beginner level material, and it's best used to supplement other lesson materials. Like any book, it's best done with a teacher. There really is a lot of good stuff here, for semi-beginner to advanced, IMO. Guitar", and I read somewhere that this book and video (originally on VHS) were the best selling ever for guitar.
